Len Scrivener was one of the Ballroom Dancing leading figures. While he was an exceptional and very successful dancer, his powers as a teacher, coach, lecturer and thinker probably had an even greater impact on Ballroom Dancing. This heritage lives in the teaching of pupils and his pupils’ pupils – two generations of top coaches of today.
After Len Scrivener’s death, Bryan Allen collected his articles and lecture notes in a book called “Just One Idea” (1983) which instantly became a hard-to-find classic. The present Second Edition, supplemented by a number of articles by Bryan Allen, proves that the heritage of Len Scrivener- author to be alive and up-to-date, in every sense of the word.
Bryan Allen, a pupil of Len Scrivener and successful dancer, has developed a career as an influential teacher and coach himself. He too has written many articles and has edited several books on Ballroom Dancing. From 1985 until 2009 he wrote a weekly column in Dance News under the title “Instep” covering many topical subjects. Since 2009, he has been the President and Chairman of the British Dance Council.
