Last week saw another shock exit of a popular celebrity from Strictly Come Dancing, with the entertaining Rev Richard Coles leaving the show. However, wardrobe, as always, was there to keep spirits up and costume designer Vicky Gill had more than a few tricks up her sleeve for the first of this year’s themed shows – Movie Week.
Opening with the cast in bold primary colours in a glorious homage to La La Land, the show saw everything from a joyous Disney tribute to Rev Richard Coles as Flash Gordon, Aljaž Skorjanec as an adorable bear and Simon Rimmer as Buzz Lightyear in a purple balaclava stitched by DSI’s Theresa Hewlett at the last minute.
Dancing a rumba as a slinky Bond girl to Diamonds Are Forever, Ruth Langsford’s incredible dress was one of the standouts of the night. Made from DSI’s black crepe with mesh sleeves, Ruth’s dress featured a navy satin belt and – what really gave it the glittering “diamond” look – thousands of our Jet AB rhinestones with stringed Crystal and Crystal AB as a necklace.
Very different in style, Janette Manrara’s adorable Troll costume had everybody talking with Claudia Winkleman picking it out for special praise. Her eye-poppingly cute outfit for the cha cha cha comprised two pieces – a cerise mesh body suit and a turquoise overdress with a Barbados hem, which was embellished with Crystal AB and Capri Blue rhinestones.
A third contrasting, but very glamorous look, was showcased by Katya Jones, who danced to Somewhere, My Love from Doctor Zhivago and had the perfect outfit for the occasion. Her cocoa double mesh peplum stoned in Jet Brown Flare created the look of a fur-lined coat – just right for the Russian winter. Although Katya also had to be cool and comfortable enough to dance with ease, which she was in her cocoa mesh leotard, with tan mesh insert.
The leotard was stoned in Light Peach and Light Colorado Topaz AB rhinestones, with stunning rose pink crepe detail at the neck embellished with our Fuchsia, Indian Pink, Rose and Crystal Aurum rhinestones.
Adding a bold dash of colour to the outfit, Katya’s skirt was made with our flamenco georgette over rose-pink pearl chiffon and georgette, which gave it a gorgeous sense of movement on the dance floor during her Viennese waltz.
